SERVICES AND THERAPEUTIC SUPPORTS

The Empowering Hive is a welcoming space for children and young people with autism or who are neurodiverse. Our therapists are specialists in working with the needs of your young person to work towards their aspirations and functional goals.

We offer therapeutic services in Occupational Therapy, Play & Dramatherapy, Psychology, and Speech Therapy (or Speech Pathology).

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

How can Occupational Therapy help young people with autism and neurodiversity?

Occupational Therapy involves tailor-made interventions and therapies to address the specific needs and goals of our participants because we value individuality. Our therapist uses a wide range of techniques to improve motor skills, visual motor coordination, social skills, cognitive skills, sensory integration, and skills for independence in activities of daily living.

The objective is to support each participant in achieving their maximum potential in daily activities e.g. self-care activities, work, leisure, and social participation.

PLAY & DRAMATHERAPY

How can Play & Dramatherapy help young people with autism and neurodiversity?

Play and Dramatherapy are therapeutic approaches that utilise the natural human tendencies for play and storytelling to facilitate emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Playtherapy is centered around the concept that play is a child’s language, offering a non-verbal avenue to express, explore, and process complex feelings and thoughts. It employs creative tools like art, puppets, and games to help individuals project and symbolise their inner experiences, fostering self-esteem, coping skills, and resilience in a non-judgmental space.

Dramatherapy, on the other hand, engages individuals through the creative arts, role play, and improvisation, tapping into the capacity for expression and play. Suitable for all ages and backgrounds, it encourages self-exploration and interpersonal connections. Dramatherapy aids in developing self-awareness, emotional regulation, and communication skills, providing a unique experiential means to navigate emotions, reshape narratives, and promote personal growth.

PSYCHOLOGY

How can Psychology help young people with autism and neurodiversity?

Psychology can help young people better understand how they feel and why they feel that way. Understanding our feelings helps us to be in a better position to find ways to manage them. Experiencing strong feelings can be uncomfortable or overwhelming, but once we understand the purpose and role of feelings and recognise that our feelings help us understand what is going on and what is important to us, it is easier to know what to do with them.

SPEECH THERAPY

How can Speech Therapy help young people with autism and neurodiversity?

Speech therapy supports young people and their families with assessment, diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders. Our approach is always tailored to suit individual needs and goals are set in collaboration with the young person’s family. Additionally, we aim to work with the educational setting and if applicable, other specialists involved with the young person, to provide a holistic solution to their needs.
